Thank you very much for keeping us informed! I retired from a scientific career in 2012. During first rate scientific research is a highly challenging endeavor even under the best of circumstances. The changes that are being implemented by the T administration will make it much more difficult! I worry especially about talented, young scientists in the early stages of their careers. It will be a tragedy if the T administration causes them to abandon their pursuit of scientific excellence!

Thank you, Holden, for this airing of alarm. So glad that you are out in front commenting on this full frontal attack on R1 universities. This is sadly reminiscent of what happened in German universities in the early 1930's. We must all speak out.

Dear Professor Thorp,

It is with great trepidation that I'd like to you to consider the (spectator) scenario: the global community is likely to get desensitized at lower levels as a result of a well-meaning strategy of rootout at the sprouting stage. You are aware of the consequences of pre-mature demonization (e.g., Tump).

Be that as it may, there's more waiting back home (cf. 2nd half of science, objective number theory beyond the arithmetic of the category of sets) for me!

Thanking you,

Yours respectfully,

posina

This post of mine deals with Medicine and related Fields, but it does argue for the necessity to provide enough context before actually addressing affairs that seem current or newer. It can be extrapolated.

Thank you for this! Do you have any advice for US-based scientists on how to stay focused on research activities (writing/reviewing papers and grants, conducting experiments, etc) amidst all the turmoil? As a trainee, it is hard to stay motivated given the uncertainty.

A lot of my high school students (and soon-to-be undergrads) currently work with scientists/mentors at local universities. Any idea of how that relationship might be impacted? I would assume that labs have fewer resources to be dealing wth high school kids.
